Why this workflow matters
College application portals, HR recruitment systems, and government upload forms routinely cap résumés and transcripts at 1MB. A scanned multi-page résumé or academic portfolio can easily reach 8–20MB, making submission impossible without compression. The challenge is getting under 1MB without blurring text or making scanned certificates unreadable. PdfPixels Compress PDF lets you choose a balanced or aggressive compression level to reliably land under that 1MB ceiling — processing entirely in your browser so your personal documents never touch an external server. Students submitting Common App essays, job seekers attaching résumés to ATS platforms, and visa applicants uploading financial affidavits all face this exact constraint every day.
Who this is for
- Students submitting college applications or scholarship documents online
- Job seekers uploading CVs to HR and ATS portals with file-size limits
- Visa and government applicants uploading financial or identity documents

Step-by-step: compress pdf to 1mb online free
Identify the portal limit
Check the upload error message or form instructions — confirm it is a 1MB (1,024KB) limit, not 1MB in megabytes of a different definition.
Upload your PDF to Compress PDF
Open PdfPixels Compress PDF in your browser and drag your oversized file into the upload zone.
Select Balanced or Extreme compression
Choose Balanced (keeps text sharp, 70–80% size reduction) or Extreme (maximum shrink to ~72 DPI) if balanced still exceeds 1MB.
Download and verify file size
After downloading, right-click the file and check Properties to confirm it is under 1,024KB before submitting.
Practical tips
- If your PDF is a scanned document with photos, try Extreme compression — text stays readable at 72 DPI for most scanned pages.
- Remove blank trailing pages before compressing; fewer pages means a smaller footprint.
- If one pass is not enough, re-upload the compressed output for a second round — diminishing returns apply but it often squeezes out the final few KB.
Common problems
Portal still rejects a file showing 1.02MB
Target 900KB on your second attempt to leave a safe margin for rounding differences between browsers and upload validators.
Scanned text becomes blurry after compression
Use Balanced instead of Extreme for text-heavy scans — Extreme is best reserved for photo-heavy portfolios.
FAQ
Can I compress a 20MB scanned résumé to under 1MB?
Yes. Scanned PDFs are essentially embedded images, and aggressive downsampling from 300 DPI to 72–96 DPI achieves 90–95% size reduction. Text remains readable for screen review at those settings.
Does compressing a PDF damage the original file?
No. PdfPixels works on a copy in your browser memory and downloads a new file. Your original PDF on disk is never modified.
